Description

2012 Domestic Boat of the Year and Best Midsize Cruiser by Cruising World Magazine. With the Sun Odyssey 379, designer Marc Lombard created a boat that "sails exceedingly well with a smart, functional layout." Its chined hull design, dual helms/rudders, and spacious cockpit, make the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 379 both comfortable and fun to sail. Highlights of the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 379 include a retractable swim platform, main and jib sheeting near both helms for ease of trimming, comfortable main saloon with extra bunk in the settee, large head with separate shower and access to a sizable...

Captain's Notes

Step aboard and the first thing you notice is how easy this 379 is to live with. The wide side decks and inboard shrouds make moving forward secure, even with a hand on a steaming mug. Down below, the galley has enough counter space to actually cook underway, with deep lockers that keep gear from migrating in a seaway. Light floods the saloon from the long coachroof windows, keeping the cabin bright even on gray days. The two‑cabin layout translates into a huge aft berth and a generous, uncluttered cockpit locker, so cruising gear, folding bikes, or an inflatable can be stowed without turning the cabin into a gear cave.

Why Odyssey 379 in Rhode Island

For local waters that often serve up changeable breezes and choppy afternoon conditions, this design really earns its keep. The moderate size makes it easy to manage short‑handed when slipping out for an evening sail, yet there’s enough waterline and volume to be comfortable on a week‑long coastal hop. Shoal draft opens up quieter anchorages and shallower coves that deeper‑keeled cruisers must bypass. Dual wheels give excellent visibility when maneuvering in tight fairways or busy mooring fields, while the cockpit layout is friendly for guests who aren’t seasoned sailors. It’s a sweet spot cruiser: big enough to roam, small enough to handle with confidence.
