Description

Built in the Ott yard in Germany and sold under Bianca Yachts, the 1978 Aphrodite 101 is known for its sleek design, tall rig, and well-thought-out winch positioning, which makes for easy shorthandling. This vessel is one of ten brought into Seattle in the late seventies to start a one-design fleet, and there are still a number of 101’s located in the Pacific Northwest. Captain's Notes

Step aboard and you feel right away that this is a sailor’s boat, not a dock queen. The long, lean hull and narrow beam give a slippery feel through the water, and the low freeboard puts you close to the action without feeling exposed. The tiller is light and precise, so you can steer with fingertips while trimming from the same spot. Side decks are uncluttered and easy to move along when you’re changing headsails or setting the anchor. Down below, it’s simple and purposeful rather than fussy: enough comfort for a weekend away, with sea berths that actually work underway and storage that’s been thoughtfully used instead of filled with gadgets you don’t need.

Why Aphrodite 101 in Washington

This design really shines in the mix of light-to-moderate breezes and choppy conditions common in local waters. The tall, efficient rig keeps the boat moving when others are stalling, while the fine entry and long waterline slice through short, confused chop without pounding. The cockpit is deep and secure for blustery afternoons, yet roomy enough for a full crew during evening races. With its modest draft, you can slip into tighter anchorages and explore shallower coves. The balance of upwind performance, responsive helm, and straightforward systems makes this model ideal for sailors who want to race competitively one day, then cruise confidently with family and friends the next.
