Description

This blue water cruiser is the most popular design of Carl Alberg; the Alberg 30. Made in 1968 by the Canadian Whitby Boatworks, this is a prime example of 'classic plastic.' Fast for its day, it is now better known for its ruggedness. With a full-keel and thick, solid fiberglass hull, the Alberg 30 boasts many circumnavigations, but this example, Rayna has proven to be a fun solo-sailer around the channel islands. Alberg designs are distinguished by their classic, folk-boat inspired lines as well as by their simple, uncluttered working layout. The boom remains safely overhead while standing in the cockpit, the traveler astern, out of the way, while the doghouse remains free of tackle. Rayna’s interior has been rebuilt with superior carpentry and design. The kitchen has been relocated amidships, allowing for a roomier settee. The sink draws from two separate water tanks and is fed by both electric and manual pumps. There is a working fridge to port, and a gimbaled Force 10 oven with propane detector starboard. The original gas powered Atomic engine has been replaced with a 20HP Beta Marine diesel with an unknown number of hours. The engine starts easily, does not consume oil/coolant excessively, but would probably benefit from cleaned injectors. A windmill has recently been swapped for a 200W, adjustable solar arch which charges a split, four lead-acid battery pack with a Victron charge controller. It’s rare to find Alberg 30s on the West Coast and rarer still in such fine nick. Solo sailors will be tempted to replace the worn genoa with a furling jib. Everyone aboard should be prepared to be peppered with compliments and questions from fellow sailors.
