Description

As hull #1, Next Wave has had the aluminum grid replaced by a Farr designed, New England Boat Works installed a carbon grid. This grid helps to make the boat stiffer and more responsive. Farr Yacht Design and Carroll Marine engineer a fast, easy to sail one-design that appeals to a variety of sailors. After purchasing the boat in 2021, the current owner went through the boat and identified some of the known build core issues and had it professionally repaired. Then, the transom was opened up to make onloading and offloading for cruising much better along with updating the boat looks. This...

Captain's Notes

Below decks, this Farr 395 keeps things purpose-built without feeling spartan. The long sea berths, secure galley and proper nav station make fast passages realistic, not just a rating-game fantasy. You’ll appreciate the cockpit ergonomics: deep enough for security, with primary winches right where a driver or trimmer can live during long legs. The wheel size and pedestal height give a clear view of jib telltales while still keeping you tucked inboard when it pipes up. Underway, the hull form rewards active driving—there’s a clear “groove” upwind and a surprisingly forgiving personality when pressed downwind. For a boat of this vintage, access to systems is refreshingly straightforward, so upgrades and race-week maintenance are far less of a project.

Why Farr 395 in California

In this region’s mixed conditions, the Farr 395’s balance of speed and control really shines. The fine entry and powerful midsections let you punch through short, stacked chop without losing pace, while the hull carries enough form stability to stay on its feet when the afternoon breeze fills in. The simple, efficient deck layout is ideal for regular around-the-buoys racing yet remains manageable for evening beer-can outings with a smaller crew. Below, the functional interior works well for weekend hops along the coast, offering real berths and a usable galley instead of stripped-out raceboat compromises. It’s a boat that can credibly line up on a start line Saturday and then cruise comfortably on Sunday.
