Description

The Hunter 380 is a mid-sized cruiser with a spacious interior and a spacious cockpit that is walk-through to the transom swim platform. Offered in shoal and deep keel versions, this is a shoal wing keel. Designed by Glenn Henderson, he remarks that she is “very maneuverable and responsive and is forgiving to sail in a breeze and easy to maneuver in close quarters like docking”. His further goals were to minimize pitching motion and improve boat speed in midrange conditions, and boost the boat’s pointing ability with a low-drag keel and a large rudder that helps generate lift. Wrap this up in...

Captain's Notes

Below decks, this 380 has the kind of layout that actually works underway, not just at the dock. The long handholds, secure L-shaped galley, and deep sinks make cooking on a heel practical, while the wide aft stateroom still leaves room to move around without crab-walking over the berth. The cockpit arch doesn’t just look modern; it keeps the mainsheet out of the cockpit and gives you a solid grab point moving forward. Generous tankage and sensible systems access under the Everwear sole mean routine checks are quick, so you’re more likely to actually do them. It’s a boat that feels thought-out by people who sail, not just draw.

Why Hunter 380 in Wisconsin

In these waters, you want a cruiser that’s forgiving when conditions change and comfortable when they don’t. The 380’s shoal draft wing keel lets you poke into shallower anchorages and explore more tucked-away coves, while still giving you enough bite to make good progress upwind on longer days. The cockpit is protected without feeling cramped, so you can spend hours on watch in real comfort. Below, the generous headroom and big aft cabin make week-long cruises or liveaboard stretches realistic, not aspirational. Easy sail handling means you can get underway for a quick afternoon breeze just as easily as you can plan a longer hop along the coast.
