Description

The Hunter 380 is a mid-sized cruiser with a spacious interior and a spacious cockpit that is walk-through to the transom swim platform. Offered in shoal and deep keel versions, this is a shoal wing keel. Designed by Glenn Henderson, he remarks that she is “very maneuverable and responsive and is forgiving to sail in a breeze and easy to maneuver in close quarters like docking”. His further goals were to minimize pitching motion and improve boat speed in midrange conditions, and boost the boat’s pointing ability with a low-drag keel and a large rudder that helps generate lift. Wrap this up in a boat that offered exceptional comfort and easy handling and suitable for short-handed sailing for a newcomer or experienced sailor alike. Steve Callahan (boat builder and designer) from Cruising World said he was more impressed with this Hunter than any he’d seen. The hull is built with solid glass and Kevlar reinforcements. It’s cost effectiveness, keeps the weight down and increases impact resistance. Comfort and low maintenance and ease of use are hallmarks of Hunter boats. The integrated SS arch & bimini over the cockpit is a defining trait. The traveler atop the arch eliminates cockpit clutter. The cockpit is a great working area and includes corner seats on the stern. The winches are self-tailing and the primaries are mounted well aft giving the helmsperson access to sail trim and boosting short-handing sailing to another level. There is a big top step in the companionway for those who like to stand in the hatch and as you enter downstairs you experience 6’6” headroom. The living space to sleep 7 is divided between the dinette to starboard and the settee to port ahead of the forward facing nav table. Both settees in the salon can be converted into sea berths. The L-shaped galley to starboard and sports two SS sinks. The master cabin is aft with an athwartship double berth, two lounge seats and private access to the head and shower. By the way, there is a separate shower stall which will please the first mate. This model was also offered with a 3-cabin version, but the large aft berth makes for better ventilation and getting about the bed. There is another double forepeak cabin forward. The floorboards are made of Everwear composite that looks like teak, and also can be lifted to gain access to plumbing, wiring and the engine shaft below cabin sole. The engine has a straight drive which is much easier to maintain than a sail drive. The swept back spreaders enable to bend on a very large main where you can sail the boat alone, or the smaller, non-over-lapping furling jib makes for super easy sail handling. And the mainsail also can be furled inside the mast. She sails at a clip on all points. The owner says the boat has been meticulously maintained and oil and filters changed annually. There’s a total screen enclosure for the cockpit keeping bugs and weather out making it totally usable. The current owner is unfortunately having health issues and is reluctantly selling the boat.
