Description

Polynesian Concept (Polycon) This was Buddy Ebsen’s (Beverly Hillbillies, Barney Jones) personal catamaran, completed in 1968. She is fiberglass construction and has a great history. She won the 1968 Transpac race to Hawaii and is still very well known in Newport Beach, CA. Catamarans of the ’60s and ’70s attracted many conventional yachtsmen who, in defiance of the rigid, stodgy tradition of conventional yachting, were intrigued enough by the raw performance of the early cats to pioneer a new generation of race boats. Men such as Ken Murphy, Jack Swart, Dr. Jack Pursell, and James Arness...

Captain's Notes

Step aboard and you feel right away that this is a sailor’s cat, not a condo on training wheels. The long, lean hulls slip easily through the water, and the open bridgedeck keeps weight low and motion quick but predictable. The cockpit is big enough to work a sail change without tripping over crew, yet compact enough that singlehanding feels natural. Visibility forward and to the bows is excellent, making it far less stressful to thread moorings or tight anchorages. Underway, the light displacement rewards a fingertip touch on the tiller and small sail trim tweaks; you’re constantly nudging her into that sweet, fast groove instead of wrestling a heavy, sluggish cruiser.

Why 35 Catamaran in California

In these waters, where light morning breezes can build quickly into a lumpy afternoon chop, this vintage CSK 35 really shines. The slim hulls accelerate in the smallest puff, so you’re actually sailing instead of motoring in marginal wind, yet the wide stance and bridgedeck clearance soften the ride when the breeze pipes up. Shallow draft lets you explore tucked‑away anchorages and sneak closer to the beach than most monohulls or heavier cats. The straightforward rig, modest systems, and protected outboard are well suited to a climate where boats live outside year‑round, making upkeep simpler while you enjoy quick evening blasts or relaxed weekend hops along the coast.
